A. When I arrived in the United States for high school, I pursued computer science at SUNY Buffalo. Graduating in 1987, I initially embarked on a career in Solid-State Electronics, utilizing my engineering background. However, I found engineering uninspiring. So, with an engineering background, I transitioned into a marketing management role, overseeing the southern New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Delaware regions. During this period, events unfolded that shifted my perspective. At my church, I befriended a senior Korean colleague with whom I regularly enjoyed coffee and shared life stories. He was a Ph.D. holder, and one day, he had been laid off due to the companyโs bankruptcy, and when he became vague about his livelihood, he bought a franchise of Seven Eleven and ran a business. A. My father maintained a close friendship with the family who founded the Mid-K Beauty Company in Chicago, IL. Both familiesโ children were also friends, including a kindergarten friend of mine, Tony Kim. Tony, exceptionally bright, arrived in the United States at a young age for studies and eventually secured a decent job. Nevertheless, he was laid off and started running a B/S retail store in Omaha Considering venturing into business myself, I decided to visit his store. To my astonishment, Tony was running his business so successfully that he could afford a Mercedes. However, when I entered the store, I witnessed Tony on the floor, sweating profusely, conducting inventory work. He sold products to customers and thanked them one by one. I was genuinely taken aback. A. Indeed, it wouldnโt have sufficed. However, it became possible due to the generosity of individuals who assisted me unconditionally during my business initiation. Among them, I can never forget the support from wholesale companies like Mid-K, Jinny, Sun Group, Nina International, Juni Hair, Shake-N-Go, and others. Mid-K provided $80,000 worth of credit for products, a pivotal foundation for my business. The forementioned hair companies exhibited faith in my business plan, extending credit for thousands of dollars worth of products over a period of six months to a year. This constituted a truly miraculous occurrence. Where else could one find individuals extending credit to entrepreneurs devoid of credit history? Is such an act conceivable within American society? This occurrence was truly remarkable. Our Korean community, through such acts, laid the foundation for the massive B/S industry we witness today. We owe immense gratitude to our seasoned businessmen for this accomplishment.
ใEric Choi, Chairman of BSW/PPF Group, embarked on his entrepreneurial journey in 1993 when he opened his first Beauty Supply(B/S) store in Syracuse. After dedicating over five years to his job, Choi decided to venture into the B/S industry. His choice of Syracuse was strategic; he explained, โSyracuse is equidistant from places like Toronto, Canada, Cleveland, Ohio, Boston, and New York City, all within a four-hour drive. So, itโs right in the middle. Thatโs why I chose Syracuse.โ Initially, he considered other locations like Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte in the Tri-State areas of South and North Carolina. However, at that time, he deemed them impossible for opening a store with just $30,000.
Ten years later, in 2003, Choi expanded his business to New Jersey. The primary reason for this expansion was the proximity of most wholesalers in that area, making it a logistical necessity to establish the headquarters there. Under the BSW (Beauty Supply Warehouse) Group, there are now over 30 B/S stores in the Northeastern United States, including Canada. Additionally, the BSW Group operates eight shoe stores known as โStreet Game,โ offering renowned brands like Nike, Timberland, New Balance, and Adidas. The group also encompasses PCS (Pantium Cloud Solution) RMS and YTT Investment Company, employing more than 450 workers.ใ
Choi shared the heartfelt story of the support he received when starting his business, highlighting his motivation for doing business: โI made a commitment while doing business. Itโs to give back everything that Iโve achieved. A. Currently, with just our PCS POS platform, you can operate 20-30 stores without any problems. For instance, in most stores today, someone must place orders for products manually. We need to earn tens or hundreds of times more than we do now. Achieving this alone is not possible. We must support each other within our Korean community, nurture the market collectively, and grow together. The Jewish people serve as our role models. The key difference between Koreans and Jews is that Koreans often display a degree of selfishness. They tend to prioritize their personal interests over the greater good. When policies are implemented in a country, they donโt assess whether those policies are beneficial or detrimental to the country as a whole; their judgment is based on whether it benefits them individually. In contrast, Americans, in general, prioritize the common good. While those who struggle to make ends meet understandably focus on their immediate needs, those with more resources believe in sharing. If youโve amassed wealth, you should share it with those in need; if youโve achieved success regionally, you should share that region, and if youโve excelled in technology, like myself, you should share your technological know-how. Only then can we achieve what the Jewish community has accomplished.โ

A. Itโs about continuing to expand the business. Some may argue that our B/S industry has reached saturation, but I donโt see it that way. When we conduct business with a foundation in data, we can confidently claim that the scope of our business is boundless. Consider the vastness of this country and the world; there are infinite business opportunities waiting to be explored.
Q. Where does this energy come from ?
A. My energy stems from my travels and hobbies. For the last entire year, I have traveled the world twice around the earth, seeing, listening, reading, and brainstorming new business ideas.
Q. What changes did you notice in yourself after returning from your trip ?
A. I realized that I had been too engrossed in my work, with little time for anything else. While it might sound self-assured, upon returning, I saw people differently. I gained insight into what people were thinking, and I no longer solely focused on conveying my thoughts to others; I began listening and evaluating. I developed a deeper understanding of why certain friends acted as they did in the past. I felt as though I had undergone a personal upgrade, and it felt truly rewarding. A. I enjoy car racing. Itโs a very luxurious hobby, but through this hobby, I build new connections and spot investment opportunities. Recently, I went car racing in Germany and Belgium for a month. Eleven couples from various regions participated. We were the only Asian couple, and most of them were billionaires. It happened that we joined this group. We rented an island, and the Michelin-starred chefs in that region served our group. While receiving such service, my wife and I couldnโt help but feel uncomfortable thinking, โWhy are we the only Koreans here?โ These trips are lavish and expensive, but when we meet such people, we learn a lot from them. Their class is undoubtedly different. Americans claim to be equal, but thatโs far from the truth. People who enjoy racing at this level are beyond what average people can imagine. In our industry, there are businessmen who have the financial conditions to join such groups. At the end of this conversation, Choi says, โNow, itโs time for our industryโs executives to aim for bigger things.โ He adds, โMoney is like water. It always finds a way in. Q. Youโve been in business for 30 years. Are there any regrets?โ
A. Many. Among them, it seems like I conducted business too kindly. If I had a more ruthless attitude and conducted business by outsmarting others or being cutthroat, I could have grown the business three times more than it is now. It might sound like a lie, but I first tried to consider others and avoid harming othersโ businesses or stepping on them when I could have. However, I have no regrets.
Q. There has been an increase in the younger generation continuing their parentsโ businesses and working in the B/S industry. Can you share some advice for them ?
A. I believe that itโs not about what you do but finding something you can enjoy doing. You should pursue a career that you desire and find fulfilling. If you canโt enjoy the B/S business, I hope you start looking for something else that you can enjoy right now. If there are young people who donโt want to, but work for their parents, I think itโs mostly because theyโre lazy. If you think you can get in a luxurious Mercedes and make enough living without working hard, youโre wrong. Thereโs nothing you can do in moderation. Also, whatโs the point of living like that? No matter what job you do, you need to do it diligently, and you need to understand that pursuing your own goals requires effort. Laziness wonโt get you there. To achieve your own goals, you need courage. If you work hard at anything, you will eventually feel a sense of accomplishment, and thatโs happiness.

A. I believe that opportunities arise when things look dark. In simple terms, when the economic situation isnโt good, you can reduce inventory, make smart buying decisions to increase margins. Some might say that itโs easier said than done, but itโs not an easy task. You must minimize unnecessary inventory and have precisely the right inventory for your business. This can only be achieved with proper data. Although BSW had a tough year last year, our sales did not decrease, and we made more money. Let me give you an example. For hair products, BSW kept inventory low recently, and then major hair companies offer us discount deals. By purchasing these products at lower prices, even if the number of customers decreased, there was no change in our profits, and we could still earn more money. In other words, you will be able to make more money even if your sales decrease because you earn more profit by buying it at a discount price. The reason why you canโt buy the product even if you get such a cheap deal is that you have more inventory than you need. Thatโs why I always emphasize doing business with accurate data. Most business owners donโt even know exactly how many items they have in stock. Usually, when starting a business, if you analyze the data, you will find that more than half of the inventory items sell less than one per month. If more than half of the products in our entire store inventory are selling less than one per month, it means that you do wrong inventory management. Having accurate inventory data is essential; otherwise, no matter how long you do business, the result will always be a disaster. It makes a significant difference in management if you know the specific number of items sold each day. When I ask specific questions about how many items are sold per day, most business owners simply reply, โThey sell well.โ I emphasize once again, doing business with data. When business is tough, lower your inventory and buy and sell deal items while maintaining your average ticket count. Another point is to maintain ticket numbers while increasing the average purchase amount per customer. Last year, African American consumers didnโt have much money, so ticket prices dropped significantly. We focused on a promotion strategy that would maintain ticket numbers while increasing the average purchase amount per customer. We tried to attract more customers to the store in any way possible. For example, if one ticket price is $10, the total sales amount is $1,000 for 100 tickets sold. If one ticket falls from $10 to $9, the total sales amount drops to $900.
